Remembering Greg Halman
The Seattle Mariners family and Major League Baseball are mourning the death of Greg Halman at age 24. He played 35 games as a rookie last season before returning home to the Netherlands to prepare for a shot at earning a full-time outfield job. Greg was well-liked by those who knew him and we all share in the grief over this sudden loss.
“The Mariners family is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Greg Halman,” chairman Howard Lincoln, president Chuck Armstrong and GM Jack Zduriencik said on behalf of the club. “Greg was a part of our organization since he was 16 and we saw him grow into a passionate young man and talented baseball player. He had an infectious smile that would greet you in the clubhouse, and he was a tremendous teammate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg’s family.”
“We are deeply shocked,” former MLB outfielder Robert Eenhorn, technical director for the Dutch baseball association, told The AP. “All our thoughts are with his family and how they are going to have to deal with this tremendous loss.”

We traveled to Seattle several times to watch the Mariners. When Halman got sent up to Seattle we looked forward to seeing him play each time. He seemed to be such a fun-spirited kid. And, that smile…! Woke up the other day to learn of his loss. Still in shock. Such a sad and tragic event.

Really sad to hear this devastating news over here in the Netherlands. As a soccerfan I love to watch baseball, never actually saw Halman in action but it truly touched me. Saw a couple games of the Mariners and last year one of the Aquasox, what a pity we can’t see him shine at Safeco anymore…..

Dear Greg,
It was a privilege to see you play for the Dutch national team a couple of times. At that time I only knew you as an extremely talented player on the diamond.
Less than three weeks ago I got the chance to get to know you in person at the European Big League Tour in Utrecht. I hosted the Question&Answer. It was unforgettable. You were sitting there with that infectious smile enjoying every second. These kids asked great questions and you responded in style.
You taught those kids probably the wisest lesson in baseball and life, when they asked you how much you earn in MLB. You don’t play baseball for the huge amounds of money but for love of the game, you commented. And that’s exactly what you did. You lived your dream taking nothing for granted. And made us proud.
I’m sure some of these kids will make it to the Big Leagues, because the way you inspired them that day in Utrecht.
The entire Dutch baseball family will miss you deeply.

Watched the Mariners play the White Sox at the Cell just this summer on a Monday nite. They had Ichiro play DH due to a late Sunday game and travel .Saw Greg play that nite in the outfield .He played great with some outstanding catches in the outfield . He reminded me of Matt Kemp of the L/A Dodgers to how athletic he was playing . He was very fast and with a great arm . Only time would make him a star in MLB . My heart goes out to the Halman family and the Mariners !

I remember the day you got called up this year and I remember seeing your name in the lineup against the rays. I watched the entire game, and as a passionate die hard mariners fan, it was a game that got me very very excited for your future as a Seattle Mariner. You were a joy to watch. I went to one of your starts against the rangers this year and was fortunate enough to sit right behind the dugout. The ms had a rough day but you had a nice two hit game. After the game as you walked down into the dugout I waved and congratulated you and looked at me waved back and talked to me for a brief moment. I’ll never forget that interaction. The Mariners are not only losing an amazing talent, but an amazing and kind person as well. RIP Greg. You will be deeply missed.

This is unreal. Greg Halman was on the verge of breaking out, not just as a player but also as a fan favorite. The stuff he did made us happy watching baseball.

I briefly coached Greg during practices for the talented players in North Holland, the Netherlands, about ten years ago. He was always asking questions, wanting to learn and always had fun playing baseball.
During the first two versions of the European Big League Tour he was one of the Major Leaguers giving clinics to European youth. Now he was coaching youth, and doing a great job. He had an infectious smile, a friendly demeanor, was accessible, which made him very popular with the kids.
This was a sad day for the whole family, the Dutch baseball nation and the Mariners organization. Greg, rest in peace.
My condolences are going to his family, friends, the mariners and everybody who knew him.

I remember I was sitting back behind home plate with my sister. It was our last game at Safeco together before I left for college on the East Coast. He was announced as the starting left fielder and the fans around me were incredibly excited – “I love the way this kid plays. He’s a fighter and loves the game of baseball.” one fan said. His first at bat he came up and battled in a 9 pitch at bat. On the seventh pitch, he fouled it straight back, over the net, and right at my sister’s face. I instinctually grabbed my glove and caught the ball, hitting my sister in the face, my first live foul ball catch.
The catch was just a memory, but what I took away from that memory was that Greg Halman was a battler. He had great potential and his attitude and demeanor as a battler was how he could unlock that potential.
My prayers and condolences go out Halman’s family, friends, and all those touched by his wonderful talent and infectious attitude.
Seems petty to remember him as a baseball player, but that is all I will ever know of Greg.
We have been robbed of a great person and ballplayer. I watched Greg play in Tacoma and Seattle. The greatest compliment that I can give is that if I had been blessed with the skill set and talent he had in baseball, I would have played the game exactly as he did. Greg played hard and with the passion of a little leaguer. Greg was born to play baseball. I will miss watching him and following his progress in the minors, he was on the cusp of being a really good major leaguer. What a terrible waste and tragedy. See you on the other side Greg, hopefully we can toss the ball around a bit when I get there.
All the comfort in the world to his friends and family and those of us that admired this talented young man from the stands. Greg, you will be missed. Our “Flying Dutchmen”.

I met Greg this summer right before he was called up to play for the Mariners. I didn’t really know who he was, but when he said he was an outfielder…we got to talking. I told him my teenage son was a centerfielder and then Greg started asking a lot of questions about my son’s season etc. I could tell he was very passionate about baseball and down to earth. A real genuine person. I will never forget that day and he will be sadly missed by all baseball fans. Rest in peace Greg. My condolences to the Halman family.
I had the opportunity to meet Greg right before he was called up to play with the Mariners this summer. I didn’t know who he was, but when he told me he was an outfielder, I shared with him that my son was an outfielder as well. Greg started asking me all sorts of questions about my son and was truly passionate about baseball! I only shared a few minutes with this man, but he was very down to earth and took the time to talk baseball with me and I will forever remember his kindness. My condolences to the Halman Family.

I remember being so excited having another newbie to the bigs come up…and I remember talking to my father about Greg….. saying watch…greg can really swing the bat hard…sure enough the first time he stepped up to the plate at safeco…..MY OH MY HOMERUN BALL GREG HALMAN!
Strangely, or ironically, i think about Greg everytime i run exercise intervals – which is almost everyday. When i’m doing my running sprints, i envision HIM running from homeplate to first plate.. he had real giddy-up! I was struck by his SMOOTH speed & batting grace watching him play with the Rainiers. I don’t know why HE struck me as a future star, but unfortunately the star’s potential will never be fulfilled. Truly a very sad end to a promising career. I wish his family all the peace.

I had the extreme pleasure of playing with Greg for the 2010 season! He was an extraordinary talent who seemed to fear nothing. He had a zest for life that clearly affected everyone he came in contact with. He was a natural leader who was destined for great things in baseball and beyond! My teammates and I likened him to a superhero and of all the players I have played with in 17 years I would say he most represented somebody who was invincible! My heart sank when I read the news this morning, truly a sad sad day to lose such a good soul. My heart goes out to his family as they lost two sons, so tragic!!!!

Chris, I was so shocked to hear the news today of Greg’s passing. As you I had talked so many times over this past season in Las Vegas, it was always a pleasure to see the great young talent in the Pacific Coast League and Greg certainly was one of those talents. I remember talking to him after one of Tacoma’s visits last year and again this past Spring in Peoria. Like yourself, he was a such a gracious guy who had such an unbelievable love for the game. He will truly be missed by all those who had the chance to meet him, even for just a brief moment, because he left such a lasting impression on all those who had that wonderful opportunity. I was at SAFECO Field this June 15, when Greg Halman hit his first major-league home run. I remember thinking at the time how great it was to see a guy hit his first homer. This news is just terrible…
I saw him play in the minors, after the game i went down next to the dugout and asked him if i could have his broken bat and he gladly gave it to me. I followed him in his journey to the majors where he had an incredibly bright future ahead of him.I hope to meet you again someday in heaven, RIP Greg, you will be missed.

He is the son of my school head. Not even joking. There was a crisis in school this morning and we all felt a bad athmosphere. We firstly didn’t know what exactly happened except that we heard that the son of our school head died of mysterious reasons. We later found out that this happened. I know this sounds really strange, and if I would read my post I wouldn’t believe it either. But it is true, and I wish condoleances to my school head and the family. Many of us have never heard of him, but we already think of him. R.I.P. Gregory. You made your mother proud, I am sure of that.

My sons and I travel to Peoria every year to watch the M’s during Spring Training. We have met Greg on many of those trips. What I will remember most is how awesome he was with the kids. He was always happy to stop and sign autographs and talk to them about baseball. Many have mentioned his smile, and it was as big as they say. You could tell that he loved playing the game and enjoyed being a role model to the kids. I feel terrible for his family and hope that they will be able to work through this in time. RIP, Greg…
I had the chance to meet him in Parma, Italy for the European Big League Tour just 9 days ago. He signed me a baseball card and we chatted a bit about my friend Alex Liddi who spend half of his season with Greg, they shared the house too. We talked even about Ivanon Coffie, an ex dutch mlb player who i played with last year in Grosseto, Italy. He was so kind and nice. I didn’t know him so well, but i can say he was a nice guy. Greg lived with me and my husband when he played for the mavericks. We have kept in touch, going to dinner with him at spring training the last few years and recently seeing him when the mariners played in Anaheim in July. He gave me a big hug before the game and said so glad your here. I will never forget his beautiful smile. My heart is very sad today

Greg is a former teammate in the Minor Leagues. I was in a state of shock when I heard the news early this morning. Greg was a great talent and we knew it was going to click soon on the baseball field. As we all know baseball is a true microcosm to life and the game was molding Hallman into something special as time moved on. He had a very infectious smile and exuberant personality and this is truly a very sad day!!!! Thoughts and prays go out to the family as both sons are lost no matter the outcome of the investigation. The thought of Halman playing Center with Roberto Clemente in Right and all of the other players lost too soon is comforting indeed. Tragic loss of one of the great young ambassadors of the sport, who did something that nobody from his country had ever done before. As a Mariner fan, it’ll be a tough season to watch, but I know we’ll honor him well. Rest in peace Greg… say hey to Dave for the rest of us.
